Nature seeks an ambitious journalist to help lead our award-winning coverage of the life sciences. You will cover exciting research discoveries, intrigue in the research community, and US science policy for our global audience of working scientists.

You will be skilled at writing fast turn-around news stories, as well as cultivating sources, digging up scoops and diving into features. Your articles will be clear, accurate and thought-provoking. You will think of the best way to tell stories, including with data graphics and images. And you will be enthusiastic about covering the coolest, cutting-edge biology, yet comfortable with working in a deadline-driven, high-pressure environment. Editing experience is a plus, but not required: depending on the candidate, the role could include the opportunity to edit news as needed.

Reporting to the Americas Bureau Chief, you will be part of a top-notch, highly collaborative and global team of science journalists. Your stories will be published online and in print.


Skills and qualifications:


  • University degree in a relevant subject and a basic knowledge of journalism values.
  • Turns in clear, accurate, well-structured copy on tight deadlines.
  • Ability to identify and generate news and feature stories of interest to Nature’s readers.
  • Enthusiasm for, and basic fluency in science topics and the ‘community’ issues that affect working scientists.
  • Good time management skills and can juggle working on both short- and long-term projects.
  • Cultivates sources to proactively find story ideas and tips.
  • Contributes to an inclusive, collegial work environment.
