Springer Nature is seeking an experienced science journalism editor for a six-month term. The Partnerships editorial team sits within Springer Nature, and this is a rare opportunity to join a talented and passionate group to create partnership editorial for Nature titles.

 

The Senior Editor, Custom Media role is a leadership position meant to elevate and expand our partnership editorial operation in APAC & China. The work includes managing editors to ensure the highest-quality commercial editorial. Our teams produce journalism-style content, with commercial partners, and maintain Nature editorial standards.

 

Candidates must have significant editorial experience, in science journalism, and a deep passion for all things research and innovation. They must be fast and fluent editors and willing to work in Nature’s style. They must also be comfortable managing reports in China, both Shanghai and Beijing. 

 

Editors will work across a number of story forms, including articles, custom publications, videos and even events. Comfort working across mediums is important. No prior experience working in video or events is required, however. Candidates must also be comfortable in a commercial role and working with paying partners.

 

This role presents a rare opportunity for a senior-level science editor to manage and develop an editorial operation in APAC & China. The Senior Editor, Custom Media has the chance to drive some of the most exciting developments in publishing at a global scale. The Partnerships group at Springer Nature is deeply committed to developing best-in-class commercial editorial. What we need is an experienced, passionate and driven individual to help us reach our goals.

 

Purpose of the role:  

  • To work with a team of editors and writers in Australia and China to help manage custom publishing in the region.

 

Key tasks:

  • Define, commission, and edit science-related commercial content, primarily with Chinese partner organisations, for Nature audiences. Discuss with clients to determine the scope of the content.
  • Plan, resource, edit and produce high-quality custom print, digital, multimedia, events and data projects as required, working with global colleagues.
  • Help remotely manage a team of staff and freelancers dedicated to the production of commercial content.
  • Be able to consistently deliver high-quality editorial content, on various platforms, that is representative of Nature standards and the brand.
  • Work with publishing/project manager to set and maintain workflows and deadlines for effective delivery of custom projects.

 

Qualifications and experience:

  • Experience in writing about complex science in easy-to-understand terms.
  • Background in science journalism, with experience writing and editing articles for science publications. A degree in a scientific topic is preferred.
  • Experience working in media (print or online), scientific publishing, or conducting content marketing/digital marketing for research institutions preferred.
  • Experience producing video content and scripts would be a plus.
  • Experience of working in an editorial role within scientific publishing.

 

Skills/knowledge:

  • Strong editing skills and a high attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage an editorial team.
  • Comfort with, and ideally experience in, a commercial publishing setting.
  • Good grasp of how to hook a reader with compelling headlines and content.
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work collegially and effectively with writers, editors, and designers.
  • Familiarity with legal and journalistic ethical principles such as conflict of interest.
  • Written and spoken fluency in Mandarin is a plus, but is not required.
