Purpose of the Role 

 

The Head of Platform Product, China is a senior leader role in the China and Product teams and will work with the global Product and Platform Group (PPG), the local China leadership and Publishing Operations (PubOps) Product Groups. This role will be responsible for the holistic unified Customer Experience (CX) product for China, strategizing, designing and orchestrating a roadmap to deliver this experience with an action plan to cover digital product strategy for 3 to 5 years. They will play a key part in the mid-term planning process to secure investment and a plan to deliver this vision.

 

The Head of Platform Product, China will lead Springer Nature’s Platform in China and will work closely with the local leadership team to meet the local needs of the Chinese market, with direct top line responsibility to deliver to Springer Nature’s annual targets. This role will create and manage the roadmap to hit these targets in close coordination with different business areas within Springer Nature (PPG, Publishing, Researcher Solutions, Content acquisition etc).

 

The role will be both a strong individual contributor and team leader with the ability and desire to simultaneously think strategically, translate strategies to tactics and actions, and effectively execute on plans. This role will help setup and manage a local delivery team in China, in close collaboration with the rest of PMs in China across the end to end experience: content acquisition, solutions, etc

 

This role will report to the EVP Product and Platform Group under Springer Nature’s Chief Publishing Officer; with a dotted line to the Managing Director, Greater China.

 

Responsibilities

Lead SN Product China Strategy:

  • Understand China’s market, trends, as well as the institutional landscape that could impact current and future researcher platform needs (content consumption, author presubmission, content acquisition, solutions)
  • Understand and navigate the local regulatory and legal landscape within which an international publishers like SN need to operate
  • Design and drive differentiated product strategies and service offerings that showcase Springer Nature as a top platform in China
  • Lead the introduction and adoption of the platform strategy through compelling narrative and assets
  • Ensure SN’s platform China strategy adapts and responds to business priorities, market trends, and customer trends and insights

Drive Platform Growth:

  • Lead the shaping and selling of Springer Nature Platform Services to meet local China needs
  • Develop all necessary documents to help drive internal buy in of proposed growth strategies:  business cases, sales pitches, etc working closely with the local China teams, MRPA, legal, etc to help ensure internal buy in
  • Partner with local and international SN Product Groups and lead the creation of pathways for new service and product opportunities; shaping compelling and profitable proposals to drive growth against platform KPIs
  • Set up and grow a local product team (engineering, UX etc) with the right mix of skills to deliver the agreed platform growth strategy.
  • Lead local Product Managers to ensure effective understanding of SN’s China Platform strategy and goals, and the execution towards this strategy

  • Know the company strategy, structure and business models in order to effectively navigate and manage stakeholder relationships.
  • Be an active member of the China Leadership Council to help engage with local senior, build understanding and gather inputs to manage product plans and delivery
  • Define and run the executive communications, continuously aligning expectations and guiding them on the engagement journey to ensure common understanding and agreements at milestones and decision points
  • Understand what success means and ensure that the value being delivered is explicit, and well understood by the stakeholders
  • Deliver suitable local integration of SN platforms/products/CX with the widely used local tech stack of China
  • Orchestrate across a multi-disciplinary team to create a unified strategy that drives customer and business value across online and offline touchpoints
  • Ensure alignment across the teams around successful delivery of CX Service Line projects that deliver profitable work and deliver referenceable case studies
  • Own the product backlog and constantly evolve it based on the latest changes in the business
  • Accountable for value prioritization for the team
  • Constantly measure the success of their project and the products you own to ensure the team is on the right track to deliver value to the customers and the business
  • A visible and active leader that provides mentorship, feedback, coaching, and advice, also builds community around capability development initiatives

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

Experience

  • Demonstrable experience (10+ years) in Leadership, Product, Agile methodologies (Kanban, Scrum), OKRs, rapid prototyping and working with local and foreign teams to deliver relevant customer products.
  • Experience working in fast paced organisations, managing uncertainty and balancing thinking strategically but also focusing on the detail to deliver tangible customer value
  • Experience working in China helping drive collaboration between local teams in China and global SN teams to deliver ambitious growth targets
  • Prior publishing experience is not required but will be a plus
  • Prior experience working in regulated industries and/or government  is not required but will be a plus

Skills

  • Excellent English language and ability to communicate effectively and tactfully across all levels of the business (written and verbal)
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on attention to detail while delivering against tight deadlines
  • Effective at selling CX and product value proposition to stakeholders
  • Able to draw out the best ideas from teams and individuals
  • Solves problems in unique ways by drawing from background and experience working in an array of contexts
  • Highly collaborative and able to identify and able to cultivate healthy team dynamics, course correcting as necessary
  • Transparent towards stakeholders and willing to be held accountable for product performance, especially in terms of revenue 
  • Customer obsessed, very experienced in talking to customers and using data and customer feedback to drive best in class customer experiences and  product strategy. 
  • Proven success in meeting product goals including quantitative, qualitative and commercial measures.
  • Expert in stakeholder management, influencing and negotiation skills, able to facilitate timely decision making. 
  • Demonstrable experience of managing products at different stages of the product lifecycle from inception to retirement.
  • Experience of mentoring or line managing product teams or other digital disciplines.
  • Highest ethical standards, integrity, authenticity, credibility and character

Qualifications    

  • BA/BS or equivalent degree.
  • MBA Preferred
