About the Role:

 

The Springer Nature Journals group aims to support researchers in communicating and advancing discovery for a better world. We do this by providing a trusted environment in which researchers can quickly, easily and transparently share their discoveries, data and research stories.

As an Associate Editor/Editor (Quality Assessment) you will contribute to the success of the BMC Series by improving the quality of submissions assigned to editors, rejecting unsuitable manuscripts, and training and supporting other team members.

Key performance indicators include rapid initial assessment and high levels of service to authors and external editors alike, ensuring the quality of published content remains high. You must be able to work autonomously, be task-focused and work towards deadlines.

 

This role works with a global team and reports into the Team Manager (Quality Assessment) and provides expert oversight of the initial assessment step of BMC Series submissions, with possible future expansion to other fully open access journals. More experienced candidates will be considered for the Editor level role.   

 

 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

 

  • Be responsible for a subset of journals within the BMC Series and manage journal pipelines.
  • Effectively handle manuscripts in line with editorial policies within target turnaround times.
  • Act as an expert in a specific area, providing advice to team members on more complex cases. 
  • Help to train Assistant Editors working on the BMC Series.
  • Help to update training materials in line with updates in workflows and processes.
  • Be involved with relevant projects and working groups with Editors and other colleagues. 

 

Experience, skills and qualifications

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Relevant experience in research academic publishing. Candidates with relevant experience in a previous role may be considered for the Editor (Quality Assessment) role. 
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proven experience in training individuals or teams preferred
  • Collaborative team player with a proven track record of positive interaction across diverse, global teams
  • Highly motivated to deliver on turnaround time targets
  • Exceptional time management and organizational abilities, capable of working effectively under pressure and meeting tight deadlines
  • Keen attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong customer service ethos
  • Proactive problem-solving skills with a history of identifying inefficiencies and suggesting improvements
  • Ability to follow instructions and adhere carefully to established procedures
