About the Role

Scientific American is at a pivotal moment and preparing to build the next generation of our web platform, and we're looking for a pragmatic and experienced Senior JavaScript Engineer to architect and build big ideas.

The Senior JavaScript engineer will help build a new distributed frontend and associated infrastructure. This will include:

  • Creating Node applications that serve as a highly performant and stable rendering layer for all of ScientificAmerican.com, tying together APIs from backend services.
  • Implement build processes and tooling that scales as the application grows in size and complexity.
  • Collaborate with the team to decide how to use a framework vs when to write clean vanilla code.
  • Improve our approaches to testing, experimentation, accessibility, and frontend performance over time.
  • Creating internal power-tools for Editors and stakeholders.

The role reports into the Director of Engineering. The ideal candidate will be an experienced and product-minded engineer who thrives on simplifying hard problems and empowering other engineers.

Flexible work arrangements are available for this role.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with Product, Engineering, and stakeholders to devise practical and effective solutions to frontend infrastructure challenges.
  • Build fast and reliable interfaces, APIs, and services that can stand the test of time.
  • Lead the technical effort on ambitious greenfield projects and iterate on the problem space over time.
  • Create systems that integrate well with others, specifically around reliable data collection and personalization.
  • Mentor and cross-train other engineers as the team grows.
  • Model for best practices in documentation and testing.
  • Additional responsibilities as needed.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  • Demonstrable, multi-year experience in both client-side JavaScript and Node.
  • Experienced working on build processes that empower the team.
  • Extensive experience with modern vanilla JavaScript (ES6+), CSS, and HTML.
  • Excellent technical judgement and a predilection towards simplicity and approachability.
  • Experience maintaining web applications with high traffic levels
  • Familiar with common Node tooling such as Express, Rollup, etc.
  • Comfortable working with modern reactive frameworks like React and Vue, but not dogmatic about them.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, comfortable collaborating with other engineers and nontechnical stakeholders alike.
  • Past experience in news media, publishing, or ecommerce would be a huge plus.

If you are an internal applicant please inform your line manager.
