Purpose of the Role  
The Senior DevOps Engineer is responsible for designing, operating, and implementing services supporting digital product development and operations for Scientific American. Reporting into the VP of Product + Technology, Scientific American (SA), this role serves to lead the technology operations effort, requiring someone with experience in designing process and managing operations for cloud services, database, backend and API administration, deployments, best practices for secure implementations, incident response and other typical devops tasks.

Responsibilities 

  • Design, implement and maintain deployment, regression, monitoring and general operating processes for our cloud-hosted web services as well as manage the development environment, all with a focus on automation
  • Improve monitoring that alerts on symptoms rather than on outages
  • Manage infrastructure scaling
  • Define and implement best security practices, including collaborating with corporate compliance and security
  • Document operating processes, configurations, and incident responses
  • Manage outage/incident response including defining on-call responsibilities incorporating other team members
  • Participate in architecture definition and design
  • Manage logging and other debugging metrics
  • Troubleshoot website functionality issues and develop creative technical solutions as required
  • Ensure sites are high performance, scalable and comply with security standards
  • Collaborate with management to set appropriate project goals, deliverables and timetables
  • Contribute to the definition of reliability and performance metrics for technology products and work to contribute solutions for meeting/improving on those KPIs
  • Evaluate new tools and techniques as needed and keep up with latest industry trends on an ongoing basis
  • Manage/improve/maintain infrastructure as code (currently CloudFormation) for our cloud services and CDN (Fastly) configuration
  • Improve and streamline server and proxy cache configuration (Nginx/Varnish)
  • Additional responsibilities as needed 
     

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

  • University degree with in computer science, computer engineering or equivalent experience
  • 4+ years of Cloud DevOps experience, with demonstrable experience using AWS
  • Very strong preference for candidates with experience in publishing/digital media/consumer facing media
  • Understanding of containerization and orchestration tools such as Docker, Docker Swarm, ECS, and Kubernetes
  • Experience and familiarity with security best practices
  • Experience using APMs and other application performance profiling techniques
  • Hands on engineering experience, ideally with Java/CFML, MySQL and NoSQL data stores, NodeJS,
  • GitHub, Continuous Integration Systems
  • Data and Automation Driven - you value observability and strive to quantify the value of product changes whenever possible

Annualized Base Salary Range: $127,000 – $150,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education and skill level.
