Job title: Health and Biology Associate Editor

Location: New York or Washington, D.C. - Hybrid working model

We are seeking an associate editor to cover health, medical and biology-related news. Coverage topics might include the latest development in a disease outbreak, the health impact of a Supreme Court decision, new cancer therapies, health-related cultural trends, a new finding about the inner workings of a cell, or new mental health treatments.


The health editor will work closely with Scientific American’s senior health editors and other beat editors, and with the rest of the editorial staff including opinion editors, engagement editors, and our photos, graphics and multimedia teams. This editor will keep closely informed about developments in beat-related fields, and will generate a steady stream of creative and original coverage ideas. The health editor will report and write timely articles, assign and edit freelance stories, and contribute to our newsletter, opinion and multimedia content.  



  • Identify important, interesting developments in health, medical science and biology
  • Identify health-related angles in major general news developments, and produce corresponding stories 
  • Report and write stories, assign content to freelancers, and edit assigned stories 
  • Consistently write compelling and grammatically sound copy
  • Attend conferences and events to find story ideas and learn what scientists are most excited about in their fields
  • May be involved in opinion articles and multimedia projects, including videos and podcasts
  • Contribute to team discussions, idea-generation and editorial strategy
  • Develop awareness of timely issues in health; help identify breaking news stories and trending topics for coverage; build a source network for insights and developments that will be exclusive to Scientific American 


Experience, skills and qualifications:

  • Degree in a field related to health, medicine or life sciences
  • At least 3 years of experience covering life sciences as a reporter or editor
  • Experience in editing multiple writers’ copy
  • Enthusiasm for news and journalism; excellent communication and writing skills; comfort with journalism values and best practices
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to work with multiple teams in a fast-paced environment and on tight deadlines
  • A commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and justice
  • Some experience with data analytics and SEO practices to inform editorial decision-making
  • Understanding of how digital news articles are produced

Annualized Base Salary Range: $74,000 – $80,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education and skill level.
