Position: Editor

Location: New York (Hybrid Working Model)

 

Springer Nature is seeking to appoint an Editor to acquire and publish content within part of its existing Plant Sciences book portfolio. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, both oral and written, as building and maintaining strong working relationships with authors, editors, and other external partners, is essential to this role.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Acquire and publish content in assigned subject areas
  • Identify potential authors and important topics by researching new and emerging trends in the market, both national and international
  • Develop relationships with academics, researchers, authors in order to maintain a network of subject-area experts
  • Expand existing book portfolio in partnership with series editors, editorial board members, and authors
  • Solicit, evaluate, and manage book proposals, including but not limited to external peer review
  • Negotiate contract terms with authors
  • Assist authors with manuscript preparation as needed
  • Prepare final manuscripts for production and remain a point of contact for authors throughout the production process
  • Business travel (domestic/international) as required
  • Manage existing Botany and Mycology book portfolio within a strategic framework determined by the Editor.

 

Experience, Skills, and Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent)
  • Have excellent English language skills, both verbal and written, with a sharp eye for detail
  • 3-4 years of work experience in a professional office environment (preferably publishing)
  • Be a diplomatic and assertive individual who is able to work with demanding stakeholders
  • Be able to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and work independently in a team environment
  • Be resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems and queries
  • Excellent networking skills

 

Desirable

  • If applying as Editor: several years of experience as an associate editor or comparable positions

Annualized Base Salary Range: $66,000 – $80,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education and skill level.
