Job Title: Editor, Education, Palgrave Macmillan

Location: New York (Hybrid Working Model)

In subjects ranging from Political Science, Economics and History, to Literature, Education, Linguistics and Sociology, the list contains original works by many of the foremost scholars, writers and editors in the world, including Nobel laureates and internationally recognized experts.

 

Palgrave Macmillan is looking for a motivated Editor to join the Education team in a permanent capacity.

 

The Editor will be responsible for acquiring and publishing a high-quality program of research monographs, edited collections, Handbooks, Palgrave Pivots, upper-level textbooks, major reference works, and open access titles and partnerships. The Editor will acquire and publish within part of the existing portfolio program in Education (Childhood and Youth) but with a focus on additional new sub-disciplines. They will work with the Education team head to drive growth and develop own portfolio as part of the strategically defined overall portfolio of the Publishing Unit. The Editor will report into the Executive Editor for Education and commission around 35 titles a year.

 

The ideal candidate will be target-driven, energetic, and open to working in an ever-changing environment. They will be a creative self-starter who has a deep understanding of academic publishing, with an entrepreneurial spirit and exceptional communication and presentation skills.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Identify authors and support them in developing and producing their projects
  • Solicit, read and evaluate book proposals offered by authors, as well as assess their suitability for the list
  • Meet goals set by editorial management such as contracts signed and manuscripts handed over to production
  • Maintain profitable relationships with book series editors, authors and advisors
  • Negotiate contract terms with authors
  • Remain a point of contact for authors/editors throughout the publication process
  • Research market trends on a national and international level
  • Manage the back-list, make decisions on publishing potential and new editions of successful titles
  • Conduct market and competitive research in assigned subject area
  • Business travel to conferences (domestic and international) as required
  • Work closely with the editorial support teams to ensure book projects are published to schedule

Experience, skills and qualifications:

Essential

  • Educated at least to degree level or equivalent
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be numerate and IT systems-literate, with a sharp eye for detail
  • Be a diplomatic and assertive individual who is able to work with demanding stake-holders
  • Be able to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and be able to work on their own initiative
  • Be resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems and queries
  • Have excellent team-working skills to deal with people within the company and externally at all levels
  • Excellent networking skills
  • Ability to work independently within a team environment

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $66,000 - $80,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
