Job Title: Director, DevOps, Scientific American

Location: New York or Washington, DC – Hybrid Working Model

 

Purpose of the Role 

The Director, DevOps is responsible for leading technology operations at Scientific American. Reporting into the VP of Product + Technology, Scientific American, this role serves to lead the technology operations effort, requiring someone with experience in two important areas:

 

Design and maintain process and operations for cloud services, database, backend and API administration, deployments, best practices for secure implementations, incident response and other typical DevOps/Dataops/MLops tasks.

 

Manage other operations professionals and oversee an incident response program for the entire development team.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership to a team of DevOps and site reliability engineers.
  • Be responsible for site uptime, performance, and security.
  • Define and implement best security practices, including collaborating with corporate compliance and security.
  • Be an ongoing link between our frontend developers, data engineers, and data analysts to ensure best practices for Dataops and data compliance.
  • Document operating processes, configurations, and incident responses.
  • Manage outage/incident response including defining responsibilities incorporating other team members.
  • Contribute to the definition of reliability and performance metrics for technology products and work to contribute solutions for meeting/improving on those KPIs.
  • Evaluate new tools and techniques as needed and keep up with latest industry trends on an ongoing basis.
  • Be a teacher and a mentor for the entire SciAm engineering organization.
  • Additional responsibilities as needed.

 

Experience, Skills and Qualifications:

  • University degree in computer science, computer engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of Cloud DevOps experience, with demonstrable experience using AWS and managing systems with customer data.
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical teams with diverse skill sets and backgrounds.
  • Understanding of containerization, Devops automation, scaling technologies.
  • Experience and familiarity with security best practices.
  • Experience deploying and maintaining high traffic applications with cloud services.
  • Experience developing and maintaining CDN caching.  Familiarity with Fastly is highly desirable.
  • Hands-on engineering experience, ideally with PostgreSQL and NoSQL data stores, Python, NodeJS, GitHub/GitHub Actions, Continuous Integration Systems, tiered data storage systems, data pipelines and basic Data Science frameworks.
  • Experience using APMs and other application performance profiling techniques.
  • Experience with data collectors and data stores.

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $170,000 - $210,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
