Position: Associate or Senior Editor
Location: New York or London - Hybrid Working Model
Deadline: October 9th, 2023
We are seeking a highly motivated Associate or Senior Editor to join the Nature Biotechnology team as our News Features Editor. Your mission will be to build upon the success of the journal’s front-half section, commissioning, editing and developing content that analyzes and provides our readers with updates on the most timely and significant problems in biotechnology and bioengineering.
This editor would be responsible for commissioning and editing News Features, longer, topical news pieces that cover emerging areas in biotechnology. The Features editor would also co-ordinate content with focus topics, as well as conduct interviews for shorter news pieces and technology highlights. You will be interacting with key scientists and opinion-makers on a daily basis to identify impactful content of relevance to the journal’s readership. Any familiarity with non-written forms of media (podcasts, video) also a plus.
To be considered for the position, you will have:
- Experience editing written scientific content.
- Breadth of research interest, awareness of emerging trends in bioengineering and biotech and an eagerness to learn about new areas and developments.
- A vision for how to improve the geographical and demographic reach of journal content and an appreciation of DEI issues
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be fluent in English (written and spoken).
- Experience using social media.
- Be eager to travel and meet scientists worldwide; learn more about them and their research.
- Be comfortable with working in a fast-paced collaborative environment, interacting with colleagues with different expertise, and taking on new challenges.
- Candidates for a senior position must demonstrate prior experience in editing content for scientific publications.
- Not required, but possibly beneficial:
- A degree in biology, biotechnology, or English.
The successful candidate will report to the Chief Editor and play an important role in setting the journal’s agenda and editorial voice.
This is a full-time position, based in our New York or London offices with flexibility for partly working from home. Internal applicants may be located at any of our Nature editorial hub offices.
To apply: Send us your resume / CV, three ideas for possible news features that the journal has not recently covered, and a brief cover letter explaining your interest in the position.
Applications will be considered on an ongoing basis.
