Scientific American seeks a digital news copy editor to work with our editorial team. The ideal candidate will have a sharp eye for detail, a proficiency in grammar and love of language, as well as enthusiasm for Scientific American’s style and core mission. The Associate Copy Editor will work alongside the Senior Digital News Copy Editor and a team of editors, writers and multimedia staff to produce our award-winning analysis and commentary on science discoveries, science policy, public health, social science, technology, and insights and innovations that matter. In addition to copyediting multiple stories a day, the staff member will also do light fact-checking and back up the copyediting and fact-checking print operation when necessary.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Copyedit and fact-check two to three online articles per day; daily assignments may include news articles, infographics, podcast and video scripts, produced videos and opinion pieces
  • Ensure clean copy that adheres to rules of grammar and mechanics, Scientific American style and clarity
  • Adhere to, and contribute to updates to, Scientific American’s style usage and sensitivity guidelines
  • Communicate with the copy director and editors and, if necessary, the legal team to make sure content is relevant and accurate

 

Experience, skills and qualifications:

  • Experience copyediting online news in a CMS; knowledge of Word required
  • Two to three years of publishing experience preferred
  • Educational level: B.A. in science or English
  • Experience working for a publication with a distinct style and style guidelines
  • An understanding of news story structure, narrative and sentence mechanics
  • Ability to pose succinct queries to editors and writers about technical content
  • Good judgment and an ability to work collegially
  • A commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and justice

Annualized Base Salary Range: $60,000 – $68,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education and skill level.
