Job Title: Managing Editor
Company: Macmillan Education

Purpose of the role: 
To take responsibility for editorial processes for print and digital publishing from developed manuscript to publication. To ensure that the material is of the highest quality, and is delivered on schedule and within budget.

 

Key Tasks:

  • Understand the Investment Approval (IA) process and contribute to the preparation of sample materials, Delivery Team costs and schedules required for IA in collaboration with Senior Managing Editor and other project stakeholders
  • Manage the Delivery Team workflow of the course from approved manuscript through to publication
     
  • Prepare manuscripts, design, media and digital assets for production, as required
     
  • Participate in copy-editing and proofreading stages as required, including checking, editing and finalising artwork briefs and audio scripts
     
  • Work with Publishing to create and maintain supplementary documentation including style sheets, page plans, media logs, archive handover documents and authoring templates as required
     
  • Coordinate proof circulations and digital releases. Collate multiple sets of feedback and work with Publishing team to capture resolution to queries
     
  • Ensure that all tasks are completed to brief, taking responsibility to alert the project team to any issues/risks if needed
     
  • Liaise between Digital Operations, Commissioning Editors and the Project Sponsor on delivery of digital components. Manage the sign-off of each course component
     
  • Work with the Project Manager, Senior Managing Editor and Publishing to manage detailed schedules for all the components of a project or a number of projects


 
Experience, skills, and qualifications:
•    Educated to degree level or equivalent combination of education and experience
•    A recognised ELT/EFL qualification and/or teaching experience would be an advantage
•    Strong organizational and editorial skills (copyediting and proofreading)
•    Knowledge of publishing processes for print and digital
•    Competent with all main office applications
•    A commitment to lifelong learning evidenced by a willingness to continually develop skills and knowledge
•    The ability to manage a varied and demanding workload
•    Strong communication and negotiation skills
•    The ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team
•    A positive attitude and commitment to the aims of the department
•    Knowledge of ELT markets, publishing and/or teaching
•    Experience in publishing (ELT setting an advantage)
•    Experience of managing multiple components simultaneously in a publishing environment
•    Experience of working with company systems and data and a willingness to learn and fully engage with all such systems
•    Experience of working across multiple regions in cross functional project teams
•    A genuine interest in ELT/language learning and more general education
•    Experience of working in an educational setting, ELT would be an advantage
