Associate Editor/Editor, Quality Assessment
Location: London, New York (Hybrid Working)
Full Time - Permanent Role

As an Associate Editor/Editor (Quality Assessment) you will contribute to the success of the Open Access Journals group by improving the quality of submissions assigned to editors, rejecting unsuitable manuscripts, and providing mentorship and advice to editorial assistants. You will also be responsible for assigning manuscripts to Associate Editors from the Editorial Board, reviewing editorial decisions for adherence to editorial policies in conjunction with the Editor, and responding to author and EBM queries as necessary.

Key performance indicators include rapid initial assessment and editor assignment and high levels of service to Authors and external Editors alike, ensuring the quality of published content remains high. You must be task-focused and work towards deadlines.

This role reports into the Editorial Quality Manager and provides expert oversight of the initial assessment step of BMC Series and Scientific Reports submissions, with possible future expansion to other fully open access portfolios, together with support from editorial assistants at SN-TPS. More experienced candidates will be considered for the Editor level role. 


•    Ensure submitted manuscripts are appropriate for peer review by screening for:
•    Research integrity issues (paper mill submissions, ethics statement problems)
•    Policy compliance for human research participants and clinical trials
•    Policy compliance for animal research
•    Data availability in line with journal policy
•    Suitability for the journal & article type
•    Biosecurity risk
•    Controversial or defamatory language/subject
•    Subject matter-specific editorial policy compliance
•    Train, mentor and provide oversight for a team of editorial assistants at SN-TPS to carry out checks on lower-risk submissions. Serve as the first point of contact for any queries or issues. 
•    Assign editorial board members to manuscripts based on subject area expertise 
•    Check that editorial board member decisions are appropriate and in line with journal policy before sending to authors
•    Request amendments from authors and provide authors with instructions for compliance
•    Escalate issues to editors as necessary
•    Maintain rapid turnaround times and ensure all checks are done thoroughly and efficiently


Additional responsibilities for the Editor level role

•    Serve as a first point of contact for troubleshooting or difficult cases among the in-house team
•    Contribute to the training and development of Associate Editors on the in-house team


Skills and Experience

•    Educated to degree level or equivalent
•    Relevant experience in research academic publishing. Candidates with more than 2 years of solid relevant experience may be considered for the Editor (Quality Assessment) role. 
•    Thorough understanding of editorial policies at Springer Nature and general research integrity concerns for a specific subject area
•    Excellent communication skills
•    Demonstrable leadership and mentoring skills
•    Team worker – evidence of positive interaction across various teams with the ability to work in a cross-cultural environment
•    Highly motivated to deliver on turnaround time targets
•    Exceptional time management and organizational skills, ability to work under pressure/tight deadlines
•    Keen eye for detail and accuracy
•    Strong customer service ethos
•    Proactive attitude to issues that arise and track record of identifying issues/inefficiencies and using own initiative to suggest solutions/improvements
•    Ability to follow instructions and adhere carefully to established procedures.


This role can be based in our London or New York offices based on a hybrid working pattern.

Annualized Base Salary Range: Associate Editor : $60,000- $70,000 Editor: $66,000-$80,000
