We're looking for a Senior Software Developer with several years of Java, Scala or Kotlin experience who will be part of our backend team ensuring access to our scientific content and indirectly help in driving sales. 


The job is based in Lisbon where you will join more than 60 other Software Developers as part of SpringerNature's digital product development team.

About Us


We are looking for skilled and passionate software developers to help us build the best products that enable librarians of institutions to discover content, and help them make informed decisions to better support their own patrons.


For this particular role we need a senior software developer to work on the team responsible for providing access to our content seamlessly on- and off-platform to entitled users by serving accurate, customizable entitlements decisions. The team is working towards improving, unifying and providing centralized access to Springer Nature content.

We also work closely with partners across the organisation to evolve our content and business models; keeping us competitive in a rapidly changing digital landscape.


You will be joining a cross functional team with different nationalities, backgrounds and experience levels. All team members collaborate to deliver solutions that best satisfy the needs of librarians.


You will collaborate with all team members in order to deliver the best solutions to maintain and enhance the access to our publishing platforms - especially to ensure the correct access to our scientific content.


About You


  • You have several years of experience in Software Development.
  • You have worked successfully with product teams in the past and ideally have some experience with mentoring junior developers.
  • You like working in a collaborative environment where there is collective ownership of the code and a blameless approach to problem resolution.
  • You are comfortable pair programming and working in a trunk-based development environment; practicing Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery.
  • You understand the benefits of Test Driven Development and automation.
  • You see the value in developers owning production software and view failure as a chance to learn.
  • You are willing to adapt to different programming languages if the need arises.
  • You believe in and can articulate our company strategy on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and you want to make Springer Nature Digital a more inclusive environment for everyone.


What you will be doing

Within 3 Months you will:

  • Get familiar with our technology stack based on Kotlin, Scala, Akka HTTP, Akka Streams, Postgres, CloudFoundry and Concourse.
  • Take part in developing new features as a member of the tech team.
  • Get familiar with, and take part in, the team’s agile processes and ceremonies.
  • Triage support queries and diagnose issues in the live applications.

By 3-6 months you will:

  • Be a supportive member on the development of the platform by using the right technology solutions to solve the problem at hand.
  • Help improve our technology stack.
  • Have an understanding of the team's context within the publishing business they are working in.
  • Be able to properly understand and discuss business requirements with Stakeholders of Product Owners.
  • Hold technical discussions with the team in order to improve the product architecture and code quality.
  • Contribute to blameless post-mortems.

By 6-12 months you will:

  • Onboard new members in the team or help other teams on the onboarding process.
  • Take part in the recruiting process helping assess applicants.
  • Transform high level requirements into actionable work.
  • Proactively provide useful and actionable feedback to team members.
  • Become an advocate for defining and implementing non-functional requirements.
  • Influence the design of the system architecture.
  • Coach junior members of the team.
  • Be able to explain and visualize the benefits and trade-offs of proposed solutions.
  • Participate in user research to better understand our users' needs.

Day to day responsibilities

As part of an Agile product team, day-to-day you will:

  • Take part in our daily stand-ups.
  • Contribute to ceremonies like planning, story writing, collaborative design and retrospectives.
  • Develop new features and improve code quality by pair programming with other team members, as well as working independently.
  • Take part in support and monitoring of our websites.
