Line manager: Publishing Manager, Macmillan Education Asia
Location: Hong Kong

Purpose of the role: Work closely with our co-publishing partners, authors and content developers to deliver quality content that meets our market requirements and customer needs.

Key tasks:
Content development

  • Commission authors and content developers, and author content themselves where necessary, to develop print and digital material that meets market requirements.
  • Develop content from initial writing briefs to publication, ensuring that all material is of an appropriate quality and fully aligned to the publishing vision of the company and co-publishing partners.
  • Establish and maintain a strong relationship with co-publishing partners through regular meetings and communications. Proactively elicit project updates, feedback and market information to inform content development.
  • Work with the Publishing Manager and co-publishing partners to effectively deliver projects on schedule and to budget.
  • Take responsibility as the lead editor for projects as defined by the Publishing Manager, leading one or more multi-component projects in a portfolio.
  • Brief external content developers on project specification, tasks, schedules and ways of working, and provide constructive, actionable feedback.
  • Present project progress and success to key stakeholders.
  • Administer content development contracts, with support from Legal.


Desk editing

  • Edit content to ensure that it is accurate, correct and free of errors. Maintain consistency within and across course components.
  • Work closely with Rights and Permissions and co-publishing partners to make sure all rights and permissions are cleared before publication.
  • Collaborate with external media providers such as audio studios, video production companies and picture researchers.


Market research

  • Research and develop course concepts in liaison with the Publishing Manager and co-publishing partners.
  • Work with co-publishing partners and conduct desk research to gather market intelligence.
  • Carry out competitor analyses.


Personal development

  • Keep up to date on ELT issues, undertaking background reading and attending conferences as appropriate.
  • Use and develop existing skills and participate in in-house/external training sessions.
  • Maintain and expand network of industry contacts to support publications.

    • UK Publishing
    • Co-publishing partners
    • Internal departments: Finance, Legal, and Sales and Marketing
    • External contributors: authors, freelancers and media providers


  • Bachelor’s degree or above, preferably in English, Linguistics, Education or Publishing
  • TEFL qualifications preferable



  • Native/Near-native speaker of English
  • Excellent written English
  • Knowledge of a second language
  • Knowledge of ELT markets and trends
  • Understanding of publishing technologies
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent teamwork and organizational skills
  • Able to work to tight deadlines and manage numerous tasks
  • Positive attitude



  • At least three years of ELT publishing experience
  • Demonstrable ELT publishing experience at project-leadership level
  • Experienced at ELT content development
  • Curriculum publishing experience involving submission to ministries of education preferable
  • Experienced at managing complex and time-sensitive projects
  • Teaching experience to speakers of other languages preferable
  • Asia/China experience preferable
