How the role fits in and the purpose

The Assistant Editor, Journals is responsible for providing valuable support to the editorial team by building good working relationships with Editors in Chief, Editorial Board Members, partners and societies, managing day-to-day administration, and contributing to or leading projects as required.



1. Support an internal team of editors in providing a best-in-class service to authors, peer reviewers and external societies, Editors-in-Chief and Editorial Board Members (EBMs).

  • Support the growth and development of a group of journals as part of the strategically defined overall portfolio within the Journals group.
  • Support the development of journal portfolios to deliver a best-in-class author experience and enjoy maximum engagement from the Editors in Chief and Editorial Board Members (EBMs) on whom we rely.
  • Understand and contribute to meeting the annual targets for journal submission, publication and transfer volumes as well as target turnaround times.
  • Strive for maximal efficiency and productivity of editors, peer-reviewers and EBMs and help to manage/streamline the peer-review process for your journals.


2. Be a first point of contact for troubleshooting and ensuring that practical tasks are completed

  • Develop strong working relationships with colleagues in production, JEO, IT and other departments to ensure that any problems encountered with your journal, and particularly by authors, editors and peer reviewers, can be swiftly and effectively resolved
  • As necessary, check any required rights, forms and permissions for third-party content
  • Ensure that policies are implemented in accordance with guidelines given
  • Mentor Editorial Assistants and provide training for new starters
  • Manage and co-ordinate special journal projects – monitor progress and chase authors to ensure timely submission of manuscripts / special issues
  • Engage with and input data into relevant systems such as JWF, JFlow etc
  • Review and make suggestions to improve and streamline processes for the team
  • Support other team members with ad-hoc tasks and requests as needed


3. Contribute to projects and initiatives that will develop your own skills and experience while supporting the wider team

  • Contribute to assigned team/departmental projects, liaising with relevant stakeholders
  • Strive towards the management of your own journal(s)
  • Occasionally support your manager during editorial trips and exhibits
  • Show your ability to support the team through smart email/phone communications (e.g. mentioning publishing options while providing service)


Experience, skills and qualifications


  • Excellent English-language skills
  • Previous experience in an editorial administration role
  • Have excellent communication and team-working skills to deal with people at all levels
  • Be able to organise and prioritise numerous tasks
  • Be resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems and queries
  • Be able to demonstrate good publishing business awareness and the ability to learn quickly
  • Be numerate and computer-literate, with a sharp eye for detail
  • Be proficient in office software


  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, preferably in a relevant  field of study
  • Highly developed awareness of publishing processes, particularly as appropriate to our disciplines

The position is offered on a full-time, fixed term contract basis (starting as soon as possible), and is preferably located in Dordrecht but could also be in our other offices.
