Purpose of the role

Editorial boards play a pivotal role in the running of scientific journals. The Head of Editorial Board Insights will provide insights to our publishing teams into their performance, and advise on optimizing the composition, staffing and way of operating. This role is part of the Business Intelligence and Change Management department which forms part of the wider Publishing Performance and Intelligence (PP&I) business area.

 

Responsibilities:

Hire and manage a team of analysts

  • Hire 1-2 analysts 
  • Energise and inspire team members to create a motivated and engaged team
  • Manage team resourcing levels by recruiting, selecting and onboarding as needed
  • Coach, develop and train team members and support their personal growth and development
  • Achieve results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results through regular communication and appraisals

 

Collaborate with our reporting team to design dashboards/reporting for better insights

  • Identify gaps in our data landscape and work with relevant teams to improve underlying data structure
  • Conceptualize, together with relevant stakeholders, dashboards to monitor performance and identify pain points
  • Refine existing dashboards
  • Drive adoption across the business of metrics for Editorial Board Member (EBM) performance and EBM composition
  • Create a framework for annual board reviews and renewals

 

Develop a blueprint for board structures

  • Create a dynamic framework for ideal board structures based on gathered data points combined with journal characteristics and strategic goals
  • Advise and support publishers in transforming editorial boards to deliver the agreed publishing objectives

 

Work with various stakeholders across Springer Nature like publishing, production, editorial engagement etc., to optimize editorial board monitoring and changes

  • Create established and trusted relationships between yourself, your team and key stakeholders to ensure buy-in for focus areas
  • Drive change to realize real benefits
  • Monitor secondary items like editor, author and reviewer satisfaction, submission & acceptance rates to make sure improvements do not come at the expense of other key KPIs.

 

Requirements:

Experience

  • Proven ability to capture unstructured data in user friendly reporting
  • Proven ability to utilize data to support daily operations and drive ongoing improvements in a logical way
  • Experience with the academic publishing process, either as an author/editor or having worked within the industry
  • Managerial experience

 

Skills

  • Excellent communication skills: the ability to deliver a clear presentation and to be able to influence stakeholders during project meetings.
  • Excellent leadership and team-building qualities
  • Thorough understanding of the needs of authors, referees and external editors
  • Strong analytical skills & data-oriented, including data visualization
  • Translating insights to actions, developing repeatable processes

 

Qualifications     

  • Graduate degree or equivalent experience in Publishing
