Authors look at a limited set of journal characteristics when choosing where to submit and publication speed is an important decision factor.  As such, we’re forming a team to analyse our article pipeline management (APM) end-to-end, identify areas for improvement and drive change. The Head of Article Pipeline Management (m/f/d) will be setting direction for the team, as well as manage initiatives hands-on. This can take the form of identifying and removing blockers for a specific journal or implement process improvements for the entire portfolio of 2,000+ titles. The overall objective is to support our business to significantly reduce turnaround times (TAT’s) on an annual basis to offer an enhanced author experience.

 

This role is part of the Business Intelligence and Change Management department which forms part of the wider Publishing Performance and Intelligence (PP&I) business area.

 

Responsibilities:

Hire and manage a team of analysts

  • Hire 2-5 article pipeline management analysts 
  • Energise and inspire team members to create a motivated and engaged team
  • Manage team resourcing levels by recruiting, selecting and onboarding as needed
  • Coach, develop and train team members and support their personal growth and development
  • Achieve results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results through regular communication and appraisals

 

Collaborate with our reporting team to design dashboards/reporting for better insights

  • Conceptualize, together with relevant stakeholders, dashboards to monitor performance and identify pain points
  • Refine existing dashboards
  • Drive adoption across the business of standardized metrics for APM measurement
  • Track performance against established KPIs

 

Identify areas with improvement opportunities along the publication cycle, from submission to acceptance

  • Take a data-driven approach identifying key areas with long turn-around times, and apply rigorous root-cause analysis to expose underlying issues
  • Set clear priorities for yourself, your team and the business

 

Work with various stakeholders across Springer Nature like publishing, production, editorial engagement etc. to optimize Article Pipeline Management and reduce turnaround times

  • Create established and trusted relationships between yourself, your team and key stakeholders to ensure buy-in for focus areas
  • Drive change to realize real benefits, measured as reduction in turnaround times
  • Monitor secondary items like editor, author and reviewer satisfaction, submission & acceptance rates to make sure improvements in TAT do not come at the expense of other key KPIs

 

 

Requirements:

Experience

  • Proven change management experience across different functional areas
  • Managerial experience
  • Worked in logistics or value chain management a plus
  • Understanding of the publication process a plus

 

Skills

  • Excellent communication skills: the ability to deliver a clear presentation and to be able to influence stakeholders during project meetings.
  • Strong project management skills, with confidence and ability to manage projects and chair meetings
  • Excellent management and team-building qualities
  • Strong analytical skills & data-oriented
  • The ability to formulate and deliver strategies

 

Welcome but not required:

  • Thorough understanding of the scientific process as it pertains to STM publishing
  • Thorough understanding of the needs of authors, referees and external editors  
  • Graduate degree or equivalent experience in Publishing
