We’re looking for a Tech/Developer Manager who can help us build top-quality user facing software products and provide line management support to a group of developers of varying levels of experience.

SN Digital (SND) is a technology division of Springer Nature. We are responsible for maintaining and delivering millions of articles used by researchers, scientists and students around the globe.

About The Job:
The focus will be split between product development work within a team and supporting the professional growth of developers, data engineers and data scientists of your team and other teams within the department.
We need someone who is passionate about supporting and helping developers. You will manage around 4-6 people with coaching, mentoring, identifying training needs, personal development plans, motivation and gathering feedback.

What you will be doing:
Within 3 months you will:

Get familiar with our technology stacks, primarily JVM-based using Java, Kotlin, or Scala, deploying to CloudFoundry via Concourse.

Take part in developing new product features as a member of the tech team.
-
Get familiar with and take part in the team's processes and ceremonies.
-
As a developer, have an understanding of your team's customers.
-
Establish a relationship with the people who report to you through one-to-ones, coaching, etc.
-
Become familiar with the goals of the Developer Manager team.
By 3-6 months you will:
-
Be a supportive member of the development of our products by using the right technology solutions to solve the problem at hand.
-
Have an understanding of the context the team is working within.
-
Be able to properly understand and discuss business requirements with stakeholders and product owners.
-
Hold technical discussions with others in technical leadership roles in order to improve the project architecture and code quality.
-
Understand the goals of the company and how the department helps to deliver them.
-
Foster an environment of trust where people can give and receive feedback.
-
Help to grow a sense of community for people in the Berlin office.
-
Help developers to establish personal development plans.
-
Have a solid understanding of how to get administrative tasks done within Springer Nature (who to talk to, the process involved, etc).

Work with the Head of Development, and other Developer Managers, to provide the developer perspective on the departmental vision.
By 6-12 months you will:

Influence the design of the system architecture and help improve our technology stack.

Onboard new members in the team or help other teams on the onboarding process.

Take part in the recruiting process helping assess applicants.
-
Transform high-level requirements into actionable work.
-
Proactively provide useful and actionable feedback to team members.
-
Participate in user research to better understand our users' needs, when applicable.
-
Contribute to the reputation of Springer Nature within the Berlin developer community. For example by getting involved with external events.
-
Help grow the developer community through events such as lunch and learns, 10% time etc.
-
Share your experiences and insights with the internal developer community.
-
Understand how each of your reports is performing and provide support where needed.
-
Ensure departmental values and ways of working are well understood.
Day-to-day responsibilities:

Hold regular one-to-ones with direct reports.
-
Escalate issues and risks.
-
Coordinate with other developer managers on strategic initiatives.
-
Provide support to developers.
-
Contribute to ceremonies like standups, planning, story writing, collaborative design and retrospectives.

Develop new features and improve code quality by pair programming with other team members, as well as working independently.

Take part in support and monitoring of our websites.
