The Publisher, Journals is responsible for the growth, development and editorial management of a portfolio of approximately twenty academic journals related to Sexual Behavior and Clinical Psychology; with the aim of becoming market leader within selected disciplines and geographies.

 

The Publisher, Journals reports to the Executive Publisher, Journals as part of the Behavior & Health Sciences group. The Editorial team in Behavioral & Health Sciences is part of a global journals program in the Humanities and Social Sciences.  The New York -based group publishes approximately 100 journals across the Springer and Palgrave imprints.  

 

Responsibilities:

 

1. Drive the editorial and publishing development of a portfolio of journals

  • Drive the growth and academic development of a group of journals as part of the strategically defined overall portfolio within the Journals group.
  • Understand and manage the annual targets for journal submission, publication and transfer volumes as well as target turnaround times.
  • Develop your journals to deliver a best-in-class author experience and enjoy maximum engagement from the Editors in Chief and Editorial Board Members (EBMs) on whom we rely.
  • Develop strong working relationships with colleagues in production, peer review management, IT and other departments to ensure that any problems encountered with your journals, and particularly by authors, editors and peer reviewers, can be swiftly and effectively resolved
  • Oversee the implementation of Journal Development Plans and improvements.

 

2. Understand and engage regularly with the research communities and third-party partners that your journals serve

  • Attend occasional external meetings/conferences to build close working relationships with external EiCs, EBMs, society partners and the wider research community
  • Understand the trends and changes in the research communities you serve to ensure that the portfolio best reflects current and future research trends
  • Become recognized as an outstanding publishing expert by the members of the relevant research communities
  • Develop and maintain relationships with a network of researchers
  • Be aware of changes within the research community and publishing industry, and translate these into proposals for successful (new) products and services including the possible acquisition of new society contracts.

 

3. Contribute to the wider Springer Nature Journals group

  • Ensure that you understand and can explain the key strategic goals of the division to internal and external partners
  • Take part in cross-departmental projects and/or company-wide task forces, pilots and working groups.
  • Take responsibility for timely resolution of research integrity/publication misconduct issues that arise in any of your journals, working with the Springer Nature Research Integrity Group (SNRIG) and Editors-in-Chief or their equivalents as appropriate.
  • Review new journal and commercial opportunities in consultation with the Executive Publisher and contribute to journal proposals
  • Represent the team in projects with Production, Sales, Marketing, Finance and other Editorial colleagues

 

Experience, skills and qualifications

  • Educated to Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, preferably in a relevant field of study
  • Previous experience within academic publishing
  • Previous experience or demonstrated interest in the portfolio’s subject matter a plus
  • Be numerate and IT systems-literate, with a sharp eye for detail
  • Be able to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and be able to work on your own initiative
  • Be resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems, queries, and opportunities
  • Have excellent team-working skills to collaborate with people within the company and externally at all levels
  • Have excellent networking and acquiring skills, and good presentation skills
  • Be flexible, able to work in a multi-cultural environment and show a commercial/entrepreneurial spirit
