The Springer Nature Journals group aims to support researchers in communicating and advancing discovery for a better world. We do this by providing a trusted environment in which researchers can quickly, easily and transparently share their discoveries, data and research stories.

Purpose of the role:

The Journal Development Manager is the primary publishing contact for their journals and takes responsibility for growing and developing a portfolio of open access and hybrid journals within microbiology. This involves conducting and overseeing the prioritisation of journals for development and the setting and implementation of journal plans.

Communication is a key part of this role, developing and maintaining excellent working relationships with our stakeholders (Editors, authors, reviewers, and societies) both directly and through support of more junior members of the publishing team (as required by business needs).

The role requires close liaison with other departments and also involves effective project management to achieve specific goals. The aims are to optimise the publishing service, utilise commercial opportunities and to increase market share of publications and citations. The Journal Development Manager translates business and team-wide objectives into journal development actions and provides experience and information to help shape the strategy of the portfolio.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with academic Editors, Editorial Boards, society executives and other key contacts in the field, with the aim of building and maintaining the journals’ reputation and increasing submissions.
  • Increase market share by building understanding of the field and your portfolio, and working with internal and external Editors and related contacts to increase submissions, citations and journal visibility.
  • Produce and implement journal development plans for the journals in their portfolio.
  • Provide coaching and training for more junior members of staff working on their own journals, as required by business needs.
  • Work with members of the team to acquire new journals in this area.
  • Monitor peer-review performance for the portfolio and assist colleagues in dealing with author queries or problem manuscripts.
  • Plan and drive the commissioning of content including pro-actively suggesting topics where necessary.
  • Ensure Editorial Boards are representative of subject breadth, customer geography/demographics, and include emerging markets. Work with internal and external Editors to keep Editorial Boards engaged and refreshed.
  • Support the management of the journals by being the primary contact for Editors and handling contract renewals.
  • Ensure the journals are promoted through all relevant avenues.
  • Organise and host Editorial Board meetings.
  • Represent the company at scientific conferences when required to improve market knowledge, to network within the community, receive feedback on the journals and to promote Springer Nature journals, and open access.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  • Educated to a degree level; preference for a biomedical background
  • Experience working in an online environment
  • Scientific journal editorial/publishing experience, including contact with editors, authors and reviewers
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills
  • Strong organisational skills with attention to detail
  • A positive and proactive approach to problem solving both in daily tasks and more complex trouble-shooting
  • Good time management skills and the ability to drive a project through to completion
  • Able to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels

  • An interest in microbiology and related disciplines
  • Experience of managing a portfolio of products in academic publishing
  • Experience of establishing strong communities around specific journals
