Job Title:  Editorial Performance Manager, Academic Journals
Location:  New York or London

Purpose of the Role


As Editorial Performance manager, you will be responsible for ensuring the success of critical journal development projects across the Biology/Medicine and Physics/Applied Sciences portfolios. Reporting to the Head of Editorial Performance, AJs, and supported by a team of Editorial Coordinators, you will work with Managing Editors to implement workflow and operational process improvements, drive journal improvement projects, and provide ongoing support for editorial board recruitment and management. The role is varied and involves working with a range of stakeholders and systems.




  • Manage a team responsible for administrative tasks necessary for project success and for long-term centralized functions needed to support editorial teams across your portfolios.
  • Responsible for creating, owning and implementing full project plans. This will include identifying the project milestones, dependencies, resources, risks and deliverables, and scheduling of all components of a project.
  • Coordinate with editorial, publishing, marketing and other key internal stakeholders to ensure that deadlines are met.
  • Proactively and frequently communicate project timelines to the project team (including team members from other departments, and colleagues in other locations if appropriate).
  • Provide regular reports regarding the project status and required actions to the team and stakeholders involved.
  • Monitor KPIs and metrics for ongoing projects and present the findings to key stakeholders on an agreed-upon schedule.
  • Build strong internal relationships with relevant teams to inform projects and optimise delivery.
  • Act as a trusted interface between editorial, publishing and other departments as needed.
  • Think creatively and be adaptive in finding solutions, analyze risk issues for the project and define mitigation strategies.
  • And any other reasonable task.


Experience, Skills & Qualifications


  • Previous experience in project management with a track record of success.
  • Thorough understanding of the needs of authors, referees, and external editors as key customers.
  • Experience of working with a range of stakeholders, internal and external.
  • Experience in editorial and/or publishing preferred.


  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills, ability to work under pressure/tight deadlines. Keen eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent conflict management skills (problem solver). Track record of identifying issues/inefficiencies and using own initiative to suggest solutions/improvements.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and stakeholder management.
  • Team worker – evidence of positive interaction across various teams. Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Strong commercial drive and aptitude for figures, along with an interest in revenue potential and development.
  • A can-do approach and willingness to adapt in the role to the needs of the specific project in fast-paced, changing environments.
  • Deep understanding of key tools such as Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, Google Data Studio, and other Google Drive products.


  • Educated to degree level
  • Formal project management training preferred
