Job title: Associate or Senior Editor

Department: Nature Reviews

Location(s): New York - Hybrid working model

Closing date: December 10th 2023

The Nature Reviews journals are unique resources and teaching tools, widely used by students and faculty. Dedicated to filtering and condensing the latest advances in their respective fields, the Reviews journals have an increasingly important role in improving the accessibility of original research.

Nature Reviews Earth & Environment joined the highly influential family of Nature Reviews journals in 2020 and has since become the top-ranked geoscience journal. The journal publishes authoritative, commissioned Review, Perspective and Comment articles covering the full breadth of Earth and environmental sciences, with core themes including weather and climate, surface processes, solid Earth, and environmental science.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated and proactive Associate or Senior Editor to lead and help shape the surface processes area of the journal, handling topics that span biogeochemistry, hydrology, geomorphology, limnology, soil science, pollution and more.

Nature Reviews editors:

  • Commission narrative reviews and opinion pieces

  • Work closely with authors throughout the writing and revision process by providing feedback on synopses, developmentally editing first drafts, line-by-line editing the final manuscript pre-acceptance, and developing ideas for figures and other display items

  • Organize and manage peer-review

  • Write Research Highlights and other editorial content

  • Liaise extensively with the scientific community through laboratory visits and international conferences, virtually or in-person

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A PhD in any topic relevant to the surface processes remit of the journal, ideally with relevant post-doctoral experience

  • Broad interest and understanding of Earth science

  • Demonstrable ability to edit text for sense, clarity, factual correctness and language

  • Strong writing ability

  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills

  • Keen attention to detail

  • Ability to absorb new areas of research, and identify new developments and research trends in fields beyond their immediate speciality

  • Willingness to travel to meet scientists and learn more about them and their work; and to tell them about the journal

  • Editorial experience is not required but is an advantage.

This is a full-time position. As Springer Nature is committed to our diversity, equity and inclusion strategy, we welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds.

To apply: Interested candidates should submit a recent CV and a cover letter explaining their interest in the position. The cover letter should also include 5 ideas for Review articles spanning the surface processes remit, including a brief (2-3 sentences each) justification for the topic and a potential lead author. Please note we will be reviewing candidate applications as they are submitted and so encourage you to apply as early as possible.
