Research Solutions is a small but dynamic and fast-growing division within Springer Nature. We help advance scientific discovery through our growing range of solutions that support researchers through every step of the research process. Within Research Solutions, the Training Solutions team delivers a range of training products (both live and on-demand) to help researchers advance their research and their careers. 

 

 

Purpose of the role

The Head of Publishing, Researcher Training Solutions (maternity cover) is a key role within the Training Solutions team. This role takes responsibility for the effective and efficient development of the content of our premium-quality training products, as well as for developing key aspects of the strategy and future direction of these products. The successful candidate will have experience of leading and managing a team, exceptional publishing instincts, a good understanding of the researcher environment, outstanding interpersonal skills and a strong background in publishing, HE, eLearning or training services. 

 

 

Responsibilities

 

People

  • Leadership: Provide trusted leadership and management to the Publishing Team.
  • Resourcing and cohesion: Work with the Head of Researcher Training Solutions to ensure that the Publishing Team is appropriately structured, and has a shared sense of community and purpose.
  • Training and professional development: Train new and existing members of the team to ensure quality and continuity of the product, and support their professional development.
  • Stakeholder management: Own the relationship between the Publishing Team and key internal and external stakeholders. 

 

Product strategy 

  • Strategy creation and implementation: Work closely with the Management Team on strategic planning for the development of our paid-for researcher training portfolio and develop/implement plans to deliver on the agreed strategies.
  • Process optimization: Review, optimise and streamline systems and processes within the publishing team to ensure that they are both rigorous and efficient.
  • Market surveillance: Identify key areas of strength and weakness, and maintain an overview of the activities of competitors to maintain our best-in-class status.

 

Quality & customer satisfaction

  • Quality assurance: Own the Quality Assurance for the content output of our Researcher Training Solutions products (live and on-demand).
  • Monitoring and reporting quality: Together with other key team members, set, monitor and report on key performance indicators. 
  • DEI: Support the development and implementation of diversity, equity and inclusion measures for the training portfolio.

 

Content development

  • Guidance on content production: Oversee and provide top-level guidance on course production. 
  • Budgeting: Work with the Head of Researcher Training Solutions to create course development budgets, and ensure these are adhered to.
  • Development of new training products: Take the lead in devising, proposing, piloting and implementing new training solutions and improvements to existing training solutions across both live and on-demand training.

 

Sales & promotion

  • Sales and marketing liaison: Act as a trusted interface between the Publishing Team and the wider sales, marketing and market intelligence teams.
  • Brand and reputation: Ensure our brands are used appropriately.

 

Experience, skills and qualifications

 

Experience

Essential

Significant experience in/understanding of:

  • People and stakeholder management
  • Working within one of the following fields: higher education, scientific research, scientific or educational/academic publishing, science communication or educational/training product development
  • Publishing and/or product development

 

Desirable

Significant experience in/understanding of:

  • Education and training techniques, the online learning landscape and/or instructional design for eLearning
  • Working collaboratively within a complex organisation

 

Skills

Essential

  • Thorough understanding of the scientific process, the research environment and the needs of researchers and institutions as key customers
  • Excellent leadership and team-building skills
  • Exceptional organisational skills, including demonstrable ability to manage competing priorities, problem-solve and make clear decisions in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • A passion for excellence in scientific research and for editorial quality

 

Desirable:

  • Ideally, an existing appropriate network
  • Credibility with regard to researcher training and editorial teams

 

Qualifications 

 

Essential 

  • An undergraduate degree

 

Desirable

  • A graduate degree in the sciences or equivalent experience in publishing
