Title: Director, Policy and Strategic Projects, Open Access

The Director, Policy and Strategic Projects, Open Access (OA) will be responsible for leading OA policies and positioning to enable Springer Nature’s OA transition, and, together with the VP Open Access, develop strategy, policy and performance initiatives to drive growth and monetisation of Springer Nature OA and hybrid journal and book portfolios. This role will involve collaboration with colleagues and teams across Springer Nature to develop and enable OA strategy, ensuring projects and thought-leadership goals are met.

 

 

The responsibilities include: 

 

Policy and OA positioning
 

 ●   Lead on open access policy across Springer Nature for journals and books, including development and implementation of new policies, and reaction to market forces.
 ●   Developing Springer Nature OA strategy and positioning in areas such as gold and green OA, and OA transition, responsible for coordination of input across business stakeholders Inc. VP OA, communications, marketing, legal, publishing, and academic affairs colleagues.
●    Responsible for delivery of a range of OA strategies, requiring multi team project coordination, including but not limited to green OA mitigation projects, and Transformative Journals.
●    Guide development of OA thought leadership activities, including partnering with comms and marketing on white papers, studies, and blogs.
●    Provide OA and policy and commercial expertise to legal and editorial rights teams to support activities such as contract template reviews.
●    Business thought-leadership and policy representative at internal and external meetings such as the internal Public Policy Steering Group, Publishing Advisory Group, and Nature OA Steering Group, and externally. E.g. the Research4Life OA taskforce, UKRI/ JISC policy working groups.
●    Speak at industry events, conferences, and webinars.
●    Engage with colleagues across the business to increase awareness of external OA policy and market developments, and Springer Nature OA initiatives and positioning.
●    Chair cross business OA policy steer co and act as the escalation point for complex queries around OA policy and positioning that are raised to the OA team.


OA strategy and commercial performance

 

●     With VP OA, lead development of OA strategy for journals and books, developing narrative and build of strategy itself through understanding of range of levers and influences. Working with colleagues in the Publishing, Sales, and Operations teams to knit together the different streams of business activities. 

●    Develop OA pricing and discounting strategies for fully OA, hybrid OA, and OA books portfolios, including optimising monetisation via regular pricing reviews, and updating waiver and discount policies in response to market forces and new business models.

●    Drive the development of business models and initiatives to support OA performance, such as flipping journals from hybrid to fully OA, OA proceedings strategy, and retrospective OA for books, new models/ products as appropriate. 

●    Revenue responsibility of OA books, including; budget setting and monitoring, strategy lead and develop and prioritization of new products and models.

●    Act as OA commercial representative at internal groups and meetings (either directly or via team members) to inform systems and workflow development as they occur, such as China payments working group, OASIS roadmap working group.

●    Act as the escalation point for complex queries around OA pricing and exceptions to business frameworks that are raised to the OA team.


Team management & leadership:


●    Management and development of global team, flexing and evolving to meet changing business and market needs.
●    Represent OA team internally and externally as a company and industry leader on OA including industry committees with senior stakeholder engagement, cross business team meetings and board meetings. 

 

 

Skills and requirements for this role: 


●    Extensive experience of working in open access market.
●    Global team and line management.
●    Managing and developing business projects.
●    Developing and implementing policy and/or positioning strategy.
●    Forecasting and budgeting experience.
●    Comfortable working in matrixed role and organization. 
●    Familiarity with publishing workflows.
●    Experience of working with a range of stakeholders, internal and external.

●    Strong knowledge of OA policy and market landscape.
●    Thorough understanding of the needs of academics and researchers.
●    Proven strategic abilities, developing and implementing new strategies and initiatives, including the ability to adapt the strategy as needed.
●    An acute commercial instinct and results focus.
●    Personal effectiveness in handling complex challenges in the external and corporate environments.
●    Creative flair, with an imaginative and innovative approach to business and policy issues.
●    Good financial skills, ability to forecast, budget and monitor growth.
●    Proven ability to meet targets and deadlines.
●    Strong project management and organisational skills particularly across a multidivisional matrixed structure.
●    Clear and persuasive communicator.
●    Excellent leadership and team-building qualities.

●     Strong graduate degree

 

This role can be located in our London, Dordrecht, New York or Berlin offices based on a hybrid working pattern and on a full-time, fixed term basis.
