Design System Manager

We’re looking for a Design Systems manager to join our digital team and lead the work on our design system, Elements.

You will be part of the Springer Nature global UX team and embedded within the design system team working to build, scale and maintain Elements. The role can be based in Lisbon, Berlin or London with remote working available up to 4 days per week.

About you

You have 2+ years of experience of working at a senior level or leading work on a design system.

We’re keen to hear from candidates with relevant experience, and we know that those people may have a range different job titles, for example:

  • senior or lead designer
  • design manager
  • product owner
  • product manager

You have demonstrated systems and platform thinking. You have a basic understanding of the technologies involved in creating and delivering design systems.

You have experience leading people to deliver a piece of work, and building strategic relationships with stakeholders.

You are able to work confidently with user researchers, designers and developers, and business stakeholders, and are comfortable taking the lead whilst still being highly collaborative.

The Product

Springer Nature is a global scientific publisher helping to advance science and accelerate solutions to address the world’s urgent challenges. We’re seeking someone to join the team responsible for building our design system, Elements.

Elements is a multi-brand web design system which enables teams across Springer Nature to create brilliant user experiences for all its brands with maximum efficiency and technical flexibility.

Our goal is to create one place to find and contribute visual styles, reusable UI components, design patterns and guidelines for creating user interfaces, and a way to use them in our products and services.

The team

We work in an agile way so you will need to work collaboratively with designers, developers, and others in order to iteratively deliver and refine your work, whilst helping to develop a content strategy and direction for Elements.

As the team is part of a wider group you will be expected to work with the rest of the UX and frontend development teams to ensure that your work fits with the wider context of improving the researcher experience on our content platforms.

What you will be doing

Within 3 months

  • Work alongside the existing Design Systems manager during a short handover period to pick up planning and leading the team’s delivery work

  • Understand our internal customers, the way the digital department works and the problems we’re trying to solve

  • Meet with stakeholders, developers and designers to understand their roles, what they need from the Elements Design System, and what challenges they might face

  • Understand how Elements fits into the wider digital and brand strategy at Springer Nature and how it can support upcoming platform development work

  • Work with the team to plan and deliver improvements to the Elements Design System and encourage adoption

Within 6 months

  • Collaborate with relevant heads of discipline and discipline leads (Design, Frontend, Product and Content) to explore opportunities where priorities overlap (for example, how Elements can support establishing content design standards)

  • Support the team in evangelising the use of the Elements to product teams across Springer Nature Digital

  • Communicate the vision and strategy for Elements to relevant stakeholders and product teams within the organisation, in a way that they can consume and understand it, and plan work around it

  • Evolve the strategy to increase adoption and scale the system

  • Resolve blockers within the team’s control

  • Engage in user research and discovery to ensure Elements is meeting the needs of its users

  • Prioritise work streams to ensure funding, resources and people are allocated appropriately

  • Evaluate and deliver value for Springer Nature and provide counsel to the project sponsor on funding discussions
