Position: Executive Publisher (Earth and Environmental Science, Journals)

Location: Heidelberg, Dordrecht, New York City, Philadelphia (Hybrid working schedule)

Springer Nature is looking for a talented individual to take accountability for the commercial success, strategic development and reputation of a portfolio of journals in the Earth and Environmental Science group. The successful candidate will have responsibility for a small international team and a portfolio of approximately 30 journals across earth and environmental science. 

You’ll enjoy maximising the efficiency and profitability of the portfolio, building new business through identification of new and emerging subject areas and will champion the needs of the portfolio and its authors and Editors.

Using your leadership and influencing skills you will coach and manage the portfolio team to achieve business goals. This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a high growth environment with lots of opportunity to make a real difference. The role of Executive Publisher is challenging and varied, and requires a thoughtful, strategic and organised approach.


  1. Drive the editorial and publishing development of a portfolio of journals
  • Lead, motivate and inspire your team to produce journals that deliver a best-in-class author experience and enjoy maximum engagement from the external editors and Editorial Board Members (EBMs) on whom we rely.
  • Manage and grow a key publishing programme in line with the journal portfolio strategy
  • Understand and communicate to your team the annual targets for journal submission, publication and transfer volumes as well as target turnaround times.
  • Ensure that all KPIs are regularly monitored, reported and met, and that action is taken as needed.
  • Strive for maximal efficiency and productivity of our editors, peer-reviewers and EBMs.
  • Contribute towards the overall editorial strategy of your publishing discipline


2. Understand and engage regularly with the research communities and third-party partners that your journals serve

  • Attend external meetings to build close working relationships with external EiCs, EBMs and the wider research community
  • Understand the trends and changes in the communities you serve to ensure that Springer Nature can respond with increased publishing volumes and/or new editors/EBMs
  • Become recognized as an outstanding publishing expert by the members of the relevant research communities
  • Develop and maintain relationships with a network of researchers
  • Be aware of changes within the research community and publishing industry, and translate these into proposals for successful (new) products and services


3. Create a positive and energetic team environment in which your team feel engaged and understand what is expected and the value of their contribution to the business.

  • Ensure that the goals for your team are well communicated and cascaded into individual objectives.
  • Engage regularly with your direct reports and carry out annual performance reviews that focus both on targets/achievements and personal development.
  • Understand the value and importance of regular communication with your wider team – both to solicit their suggestions and ideas, and to report back to them on our activities and progress
  • Carefully control staff, travel and innovation costs to ensure that the division remains as profitable as possible while not compromising on quality or service.
  • Role-model the leadership principles and ensure that these are incorporated into the day-to-day running of your publishing area.


4. Contribute to the wider Springer Nature Journals division

  • Take part – and encourage your team to take part – in cross-departmental projects and/or company-wide task forces and working groups.
  • Champion research integrity within your area and ensure that your team takes responsibility for identifying and dealing with instances of research misconduct or other integrity issues.
  • Contribute to publishing guidelines in close cooperation with the Editorial Director and the VP Journals Development, Policy & Strategy
  • Ensure that you understand and can explain they key strategic goals of the division, and key publishing initiatives such as SharedIt, ORCID and Publons.
  • Review new journal and commercial opportunities in consultation with the Editorial Director; write journal proposals
  • Initiate and represent the team in projects with Production, Sales, Marketing, Finance and other Editorial colleagues



Experience, skills and qualifications


  • Excellent English language skills
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, preferably in a relevant field
  • Demonstrable experience of leading a team within an academic publishing environment
  • Sound analytical skills
  • Proactive attitude
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to develop and progress business proposals
  • Excellent negotiating skills
  • Ability to manage and motivate others
  • Financial understanding

Domestic and international travel is required, when appropriate.
