The Springer Nature Journals group aims to support researchers in communicating and advancing discovery for a better world. We do this by providing a trusted environment in which researchers can quickly, easily and transparently share their discoveries, data and research stories. 


We are seeking an Associate Publisher/Publisher to help us on getting more submissions and publications from scientific events in computer, materials sciences and engineering and contribute to running the Eastern European journals program. Reporting to Vice President, Eastern European Journals and in cooperation with colleagues from hybrid and OA journal and book departments, as well as with the scientific communities to attract content from conferences as special issues, collections, conference proceedings and individual articles.


Key Tasks

  • Drive the growth and development of a group of journals as part of the strategically defined overall portfolio within the Journals group.

  • Acquisition of special issues, collections, conference proceedings in computer, materials science and engineering (applied sciences), in cooperation with journals and books teams.

  • Building and managing relationships with authors, editors, societies, and the research community at large, in particular, by attending external meetings.

  • Ensure that all KPIs are regularly monitored, reported and met, and that action is taken as needed. The main KPIs for this position include revenues, number of submissions, acceptances and publications from conferences, in applied sciences and from Eastern Europe.

  • Develop strong working relationships with colleagues in production, JEO, IT and other departments to ensure that any problems encountered with your journal, and particularly by authors, editors and peer reviewers, can be swiftly and effectively resolved.

  • Contribute to pilots and implementations as needed working closely with the VP Editorial Operations and their team, and take full responsibility for communicating any changes to your key EBMs and partners


Experience and skills

  • ​​Excellent English language skills

  • Managing complex cross-department projects;

  • Sound analytical skills

  • Positive and proactive approach to problem solving, taking ownership to drive and complete tasks while meeting deadlines

  • Excellent interpersonal, networking, and negotiation skills

  • Good presentation skills

  • MS or PhD degree in computer, materials sciences, engineering or closely related field, ideally proven by own publications

  • Prepared to travel frequently and worldwide

  • (Plus) Demonstrable experience within academic publishing, such as managing a publication program, e.g. a portfolio of journals or conferences and handling negotiations with societies, EiCs

  • (Plus) Implementation of open science practices (open access, open data, reproducibility)
