Purpose of the Role  

Responsible for the strategic growth, development and editorial management of a bilingual portfolio in the Chemistry Books Editorial team. The role involves acquisition of book projects; market/competitive research; coordinates and/or negotiates publishing agreements; evaluates book proposals offered by authors/editors and submitted manuscripts to assess acceptability of manuscript; travels to conferences/campus visits for acquisitions purposes; works with electronic systems as needed; monitors schedules for projects; developing and maintaining a large network of authors/editors; liaises with other Springer personnel in production, marketing, and sales.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Manages and grows an English and German language publishing program in the fields of Chemistry & Material Science, delivering competitive and profitable products in line with Publishing Unit strategy with a focus on organic chemistry and catalysis in the English language program
  • Learns and performs key publishing acquisition activities with development guidance from manager / peers, including:
    • Soliciting, reading, and evaluating proposals and manuscripts to determine commercial viability, audience, market, and suitability for the list
    • Researching market trends to identify new authors, new titles and new products
    • Managing the backlist associated with the assigned areas, maintaining profitable relationships with existing authors, book series editors and editorial board members 
    • Supporting authors and editors in developing their book projects
    • Negotiates publishing contract terms
    • Remaining a point of contact for authors/editors throughout publication process
  • Builds an understanding of editorial policies and processes, ensuring they are consistently applied across activities and goals set by editorial management are met
  • Develops and maintains a good network of authors/editors through various engagement activities within the research community
  • Continually promotes and builds the brand through virtual interactions as well as travelling widely to academic conferences and campus visits.
  • Maintains continuous cooperation and dialogue with editorial service, marketing, production and other relevant departments concerning individual projects as well as general questions of mutual interest

 

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

 

  • Academic degree in Chemistry or a closely related scientific discipline
  • Fluency in English and German, both orally and written
  • An interest in and understanding of how academic publishing and communities function
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and influencing skills
  • Numerate and IT systems-literate, with a sharp eye for detail, proven experience with social media is preferred
  • Able to organise and prioritise numerous tasks and be able to work on their own initiative
  • Resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems and queries
  • Excellent team-working and relationship building skills
  • Able to work independently within a (virtual) team environment.
  • Editorial experience desirable but not essential
