Director, Business Control -  Publishing Performance & Intelligence

How the role fits in and its purpose:

 

The Director, Business Control Publishing Performance & Intelligence (PP&I) will be part of the global Management Team and support the development of the PP&I strategy from a financial and operational control perspective. 

 

They will translate the PP&I group strategy into an operational budget, reporting structure and control mechanism to ensure the delivery of the set operational goals across and within the PP&I group. 

 

The key PP&I group goal is to drive growth, especially in the OA area, by increasing the level of article transfers, commissioning of new collections and continuously improving editorial engagement. Underlying parameters to succeed are improvements in article submission levels, turnaround times (TATs), accept rates (ARs) as well as the publishing performance improvement by driving change and develop the editorial community. 

 

Besides the Business Control function, the PP&I group consists of five teams:

 

  1. The ‘Submission & Author Service’ team that will drive and enable successful article transfers
  2. The ‘Content Acquisition’ team that will drive and deliver the growth and development of collections and their article publications 
  3. The ‘Editorial Engagement’ team focusing on improving the performance of external editors and Editorial Board Members (EBMs)
  4. The ‘Business Intelligence and Change Management’ team – Measure, analyze and drive change to improve the performance of all journals, collections and articles across Springer Nature 
  5. The ‘PP&IG Centre of Excellence’. Acts as single go-to party and gatekeeper to ensure global use, roll out and continuously improve the defined publishing model

  

Responsibilities

 

1. Build and manage the Business Control structure

  • Define reporting structures for PP&I group and underlying teams
  • Recruit and manage two Business Control analysts
  • Instil a performance-focused culture that supports reliable delivery of targets
  • Establish robust mechanisms for reporting on progress towards targets and goals
  • Carefully control (personnel) costs to ensure budgets are adhered

 

2. Support the strategy development and implementation for PP&I

  • Help define the PP&I strategy
  • Translate strategy in operational and financial planning and guide the execution of it
  • Define, align and monitor progress of investment cases where applicable
  • Support the content acquisition team with operational numbers related to collections, submission, published articles, accept rates, pipeline management and any other operational needed insights
  • Support the Submission & Author service team with specific transfer reporting and align those with applicable stakeholders
  • Support the Editorial Engagement team with Editorial related reporting on Satisfaction levels, activity levels, rewards and operational activities
  • Support all PP&I teams with costs budgeting
  • Act as PP&I intermediate with the finance department for reporting on Business Review Meeting inputs, budgets and actuals
  • Seek input and share the strategy with the company wide stakeholder group like publishing, operations, customer service, finance and technology journal teams, and ensure that they are motivated to support this work

 

3. Establish Reporting, Dashboards, Controls and Alignment infrastructure

  • Define and align reporting requirements that supports the defined strategy
  • Establish recurring alignment / meeting structure to evaluate status and resolve issues at PP&I MT level and to inform SN wide roll up
  • Develop roll up and cascade of global goals and budgets to the PP&I team 
  • Align budgets with stakeholders and ensures consistency
  • Develop mechanisms to showcase out of boundary situations and align those with applicable owners

 

4. Contribute actively to the Publishing Performance and Intelligence management team

  • Contribute to develop, enhance and agree the strategic narrative
  • Communicate the strategy to guide and inspire the entire group and its stakeholders
  • Captures strategy in reporting structure, controls and follow up process

 

5. Operational & financial management and reporting

  • Establish costs and operational annual team budgets
  • Establish and continuously report on operational activities, variations to budget and possible mitigation actions to further improve
  • Develop business cases and financially manage those after approval
  • Prepare and deliver monthly Business Review meetings 

 

Experience, skills and qualifications

 

  • Proven ability to support strategy development
  • Translate and capture strategy into operational activity reporting, dashboards and control mechanisms 
  • Strong analytical skills, able to collect and analyze information to support business development and problem solving
  • Strong leadership abilities and natural style of assessing actual business performance versus set goals
  • Motivated by and capable of detailed controlling, validating and aligning operational planning
  • Track record of working across geographies and with different nationalities and cultures
  • Experience with presenting to and working with senior (C-level) management
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build both internal and external relationships
  • Flexibility to travel when needed
