Vice-President (VP) Journals – Hybrid Portfolio

The Springer Nature Journals group was formed two years ago from a merger of the Nature Research, Open Access and Springer business units. The group is at the heart of Springer Nature, responsible for 3,000 titles across the life sciences, medicine, physical and applied sciences, humanities and social sciences. Springer Nature’s journals have embraced the transition to Open Access, and the company published more articles under this business model than any other publisher in 2019.

We are now looking for a Vice President (VP) Journals, a single leader for the Hybrid journals portfolio, who will join the team alongside our VPs for the Open Access and Nature journals portfolios.

The Hybrid portfolio is at the core of Springer Nature’s journals programme. It has a long history with strong brands – notably Springer and Palgrave Macmillan – as well as newer programmes such as the SN journals. It includes some of the top journals in their fields by reputation or by impact factor, strong relationships with prestigious external societies and associations, and dedicated people who are rightly proud of their individual programmes.

The Role

The VP Journals, Hybrid Portfolio is a high profile leadership role, responsible for the strategic and operational management and development of Springer Nature‘s Hybrid journals portfolio. This role is critical for leading the creation of the strategy and leading these journals to meet the agreed publication targets. Key responsibilities include: developing and implementing the Hybrid strategy; being accountable for the overall Hybrid journals business performance; driving publication initiatives to meet submission, publication and turnaround time targets; managing the Hybrid journals team to deliver a customer-focused, professional service to external editorial teams and societies; ensuring delivery by key internal partners (JEO, Production, Marketing, Snapp, PPI, PPG); and developing the programme to ensure we publish quality journals with high levels of robustness and integrity.

What We Need From You

  • The VP Journals position is a leadership role, and we’re looking for somebody who can inspire and develop our talented staff.
  • You will embrace change, innovation, diversity and creativity, and create an environment in which colleagues who display these characteristics can thrive.
  • You will also be willing to roll up your sleeves when needed, to support the team in tackling problems, driving projects or making change happen.
  • You will need to be a true team player, contributing to the success of the entire Journals group by developing productive working relationships with colleagues within and beyond the group.
  • You will bring energy, ideas and new approaches while understanding and respecting the ingredients that have made the portfolio successful to date.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please submit a copy of your CV along with a covering letter detailing what you believe are the key skills for the role.

At Springer Nature, we value the diversity of our teams and work to build an inclusive culture, where people are treated fairly and can bring their differences to work and thrive.
