Purpose of the Role 

Responsible for the strategic growth, development and editorial management of a portfolio in the Chemistry Books Editorial team. The role involves acquisition of book projects; market/competitive research; coordinates and/or negotiates publishing agreements; evaluates book proposals offered by authors/editors and submitted manuscripts to assess acceptability of manuscript; travels to conferences/campus visits for acquisitions purposes; works with electronic systems as needed; monitors schedules for projects; developing and maintaining a large network of authors/editors; liaises with other Springer personnel in production, marketing, and sales.

 

Main Responsibilities:

 

  • Manages and grows a publishing program in the fields of Chemistry & Material Science with a particular focus on China based authors/editors and Polymer Chemistry with an international remit, delivering competitive and profitable products in line with Publishing Unit strategy
  • Performs key publishing acquisition activities, including:
    • Soliciting, reading, and evaluating proposals and manuscripts to determine commercial viability, audience, market, and suitability for the list
    • Researching market trends to identify new authors, new titles and new products
    • Managing the backlist associated with the assigned areas, maintaining profitable relationships with existing authors, book series editors and editorial board members
    • Supporting authors and editors in developing their book projects
    • Negotiates publishing contract terms
    • Remaining a point of contact for authors/editors throughout publication process
  • Ensures editorial policies and processes are consistently applied across activities and goals set by editorial management are met
  • Develops and maintains a good network of authors/editors through various engagement activities within the research community
  • Continually promotes and builds the brand through virtual interactions as well as travelling widely to academic conferences and campus visits.
  • Maintains continuous cooperation and dialogue with editorial service, marketing, production and other relevant departments concerning individual projects as well as general questions of mutual interest
  • Supports the training and/or mentoring of new and junior team members

 

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  • College degree in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline
  • Fluency in English, both orally and written
  • High level of computer literacy (including MS Office, Outlook and internet browsers)
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels and as part of a team
  • Positive and proactive approach to problem solving, taking ownership to drive and complete tasks
  • Strong organizational skills, including proven ability to consistently meet deadlines
  • Editorial experience desirable but not essential
